Gaim: Instant Messaging on Steroids

If you have multiple Instant Messaging accounts, like Yahoo, AOL IM, and MSN, then this is for you!

I used to have all sorts of IM accounts. I still do. I have accounts with ICQ, AOL IM, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, and also frequently spend time in IRC. But, running all those programs eat up memory and taskbar realty (By the time in the lower right-hand corner of your screen). Then I found Gaim!

Ok, so I lied. Gaim found me! I'm a linux nut. I used to use linux as my workstation all the time, until I just had to have some Windows programs running that Wine just couldn't handle. So I switched back to running XP on my workstation. But I brought along with me a great program that found me on my linux workstation. Gaim.
I was just clicking through all of the programs installed with my new redhat installation (I use fedora now on machines), and it popped up.

Gaim not only runs on linux, but also on Windows. I think they are even working on a couple of other ports to other operating systems.

Some of the best things Gaim does is:

  • Handles a lot of IM accounts:
    • AOL IM (AIM)
    • ICQ
    • Gadu-Gadu
    • Groupwise
    • Jabber
    • MSN Messenger
    • Napster
    • SILC
    • Yahoo
  • Handles IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
  • Keeps logs of chats (And is easy to deal with!)
  • Allows you to easily change you away message for one of all accounts
  • Works with proxies easily
  • Easily setup all or some accounts to auto-login.
  • Auto-reconnects when connection is lost
  • Setup groups for each account
  • Downloads your 'buddies' from the appropriate server
  • Has many plugins to add capabilities.

The plugin capability of Gaim is awesome! I even wrote one a long time ago that would make my computer 'say' who came online or who sent a message. (I was using 'festival' on linux to do that). I haven't re-written that plugin, but there's always someone that will come up with it for windows.

One plugin that I can't live without anymore is Guifications. It allows you to have popup notifications for everything from a person typing you a message to someone coming online or logging off. It's really nice and has a variety of skins or themes that go with it. The theme I like the most, so far, is kONE. I had to make a couple of language changes to it, but it is awesome!

Go get Gaim today!
